Position Summary

The AVP has institution-wide responsibility for leadership, management, coordination, and development of international programs. The AVP works with faculty and with other administrators to develop policies governing international programs and leads the campus in implementing these policies. The AVP will expand the university’s international culture and programs by expanding short-term study abroad and longer-term exchange opportunities for students, increasing faculty exchange programs, promoting international collaborative projects, expanding strategic relationships with global partners, and recruiting international students.

The AVP works closely with academic deans, department chairs, faculty, and other campus leaders and is responsible for building and maintaining strong and collaborative relationships with other campus units and working with appropriate faculty across the university to develop programming and curriculum. Other duties, chosen in consultation with the provost, may be assigned to reflect the successful candidate’s expertise and interests.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

The AVP will provide vision and leadership for implementing the international education initiatives of the university, and, in cooperation with senior staff across campus, will

Plan, develop, and supervise the academic program areas of international education throughout the university in cooperation with the academic deans and other university officials in support of the university mission.

Promote the internationalization of curriculum, services, programs, and activities of the university and negotiate agreements with institutions abroad in collaboration, as appropriate, with other U.S. institutions.

Ensure compliance with applicable immigration regulations.

Represent international education at UCA through active membership in professional associations, networking with other offices nationally and internationally, attending conferences, and serving on boards of international education organizations and consortia.

Provide oversight for the UCA Confucius Institute, its director, the Teach Chinese in Arkansas program, and its other activities.

Oversee recruitment, admission, student services, language support, and immigration advising of/for international students in cooperation with other university officials and departments.

In collaboration with the Study Abroad Advisory Committee, oversee planning and direction of study abroad programs for students and exchange programs for students and faculty through institution-specific and other partnership agreements.

Coordinate visits, hosting, and activities of international scholars and visitors.

Supervise the personnel in the Office of International Engagement in all areas, including their contacts with schools and colleges regarding international programs, international faculty, and development of international agreements, exchanges, and other activities on behalf of the University.

Maintain general oversight of budget requests and annual reports for the Office of International Engagement and the expenditure of funds from those budgets and other funds that may be designated for international programs, including grants and external funding.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The university seeks candidates for this position with the following qualifications and qualities:

Academic credentials and a record of teaching, research/scholarship, and service meriting a tenured appointment at the rank of associate or full professor in a department within one of UCA’s academic colleges

At least five years of demonstrably successful leadership experience in international education and engagement, including a history of building successful partnerships between institutions, a proven track record of supervisory and budget-management experience, and excellent communication and collaboration skills

Expertise in international student recruitment, admissions, and enrollment management practices, as well as applicable federal and international laws and regulations

An understanding of international student support services, such as English as a Second Language programs

A commitment to academic vitality, integrity, and diversity
